Jigsaw Games

Jigsaws are a great way to spend free time. The latest survey finds out if jigsaws are still popular. 1,930 children between the ages of 5 and 17 were asked the following question: "Would you like to do any jigsaw puzzles with your family or yourself over Christmas holidays?"

• 65% of children were not going to do a jigsaw over Christmas
• 35% thought that they would like to put a jigsaw together with their family

So, just over a third of children still do jigsaws. That's not a small number. It shows how jigsaws have managed to stand the test of time. Jigsaws were invented in the 1760s by British cartographer John Spilsbury. He wanted them to help learn geography. The first ones were made by maps on sheets of wood and cutting pieces around the borders (границы) of countries. Children fitted these countries together in the correct places to rebuild the maps. They were quite popular with the children of king George III. Jigsaws were so popular that they started to make them for adults as well as children. Designs became more complex, pieces smaller, and the puzzles themselves larger. They are good for brain development as they mean logic and creativity.
