Dickens World

A. A theme park that celebrates the life and writings of Charles Dickens opened in Britain on 25 May 2007. It was built on old docks just east of London where Dickens lived for a time as a child. Many of the locations and characters in his novels are based on buildings, places and people of the towns round London. Dickens World was designed by Gerry O'Sullivan-Beare who also created Santa World in Sweden.

B. Charles Dickens, one of Britain's greatest writers, is associated with Victorian London and in particular the misery (невзгоды) and poverty of the big city. Dickens World was opened on an industrial estate in the town of Chatham in Kent where the writer grew up. The theme park gave "a feeling of what life was like in Dickens's England".

C. Dickens World was an indoor attraction, centered on a courtyard with facades of buildings related to Dickens. Visitors enjoyed a journey of discovery. The central boat ride took visitors through an interactive stage set of picturesque slums (трущобы) and their smells. It provoked a familiar debate of entertainment versus education. The critics say the real Dickens experience is in the books - and trips down fake Victorian sewers (канализация) won't get people to read.

D. The organizers replied that the writer had been a great entertainer and could like the idea of such a theme park. When Dickens World first opened it included a Great Expectations-themed water ride, a Haunted House, a 4D movie at Peggotty's boathouse, an interactive schoolhouse, a themed bar and restaurant. Visitors finished their journey in a gift shop called The Olde Curiosity Shoppe.

E. It was of course a business proposition, investing 120 million dollars, and predicting 300,000 visitors a year. The organizers believed that the name of Dickens and theme park versions of misery and poverty would attract a lot of people to the new park. But the attraction was losing money and it was closed on 12 October 2016.
