The Legend of Korkyt Ata

The legend of Korkyt Ata is very popular in Kazakhstan. Korkyt Ata was a famous akyn - poet and musician - and the man who made the first kobyz, a well-known musical instrument.

The legend says that before Korkyt Ata was born, there was an eclipse of the sun. Everything went dark and there was a big storm. Then, when Korkyt Ata came into the world, the sun started to shine again!

As a young boy, Korkyt Ata didn't want to see or think about the dark side of life. He didn't want to die, he wanted to live forever! One day, Korkyt Ata had a dream. In the dream angels told him how to make a kobyz! Korkyt Ata made the kobyz and when he played it he forgot all about death. He put all his time and his feelings into the music he played. People from all over the country heard the wonderful sounds of the kobyz! Everyone listened in wonder to its beautiful music. Even the birds in the air stopped flying, and the wind stopped blowing!

Korkyt Ata grew old and finally, he too died. But the name of Korkyt Ata lives on forever in the sounds of the kobyz and in the hearts of the people of Kazakhstan!
