The Consumer Electronics Show

1. The Consumer (потребитель) Electronics Show is an annual event in which companies introduce their new electronic products and gadgets. 150,000 people attended this year's show, the biggest in its 45-year history. Among the 20,000 products were the usual things – smarter televisions, smaller cameras etc. But there were unique objects as well.

2. Today when every electronic gadget is going mini, introducing a personal computer the size of a coffee table may sound a little strange. But this Windows-based computer from Lenova is pretty cool. It has a giant screen to work with, and the 27-inch (68 cm) computer can become flat and turn into an interactive game board, complete with its own electronic dice. Time to give away those old-fashioned cardboard games!

3. Another interesting object is a smart fork! Using electronic sensors the Hapifork monitors how fast the user is chewing down his or her food. If you eat too fast the fork will vibrate and flash bright warning lights.

4. If you buy Flower Power your plants in the house will grow better! The wireless tech company Parrot developed it. The sensor monitors (контролирует) sunlight, temperature, water and fertilizer conditions. It warns (предупреждает) the owner of any problems via their iPhone or iPad. For the new (ignorant) plant owner, the gadget also has care instructions for over 6,000 plants. It has the names and even images for those who don’t know what plant they are growing.

5. The mRobo is more than just a portable speaker that can make music! It is also a dancer! As soon as the music turns on, the 20-centimeter speaker transforms into a ‘giant’, 45-cm tall robot and starts to show some rather impressive dance moves. Users can also programme a series of their own moves for the mRobo.

What Do Children Use Their Mobiles For?

A. Mobile phones are everywhere. We all have one and we use them for much more than phone calls and text messages. Modern devices are like miniature desktops with all sorts of applications, from weather reports and shopping apps to social media and web browsers.

B. Mobiles not only help us to call somebody or send text messages but also to play, surf and do many other things. 1100 schoolchildren were asked which apps and functions on their mobiles they would rather do without if they had to. The results surprised the researchers.

C. The first thing we associate with children is playing games. So it was shocking to see that the function children would miss the least on their phones is games. Over a quarter of the children (28%) chose games as the app they would most happily do without. Social media is another feature of modern life that is associated with the younger generation. Amazingly just under a sixth (17%) of children said they would do without social media.

D. The main function of a phone is to send and receive calls. Did the children in the survey think the same? Yes, they do. Only 10% of those who answered the survey said that they could do without them. Alexander Graham Bell would be proud of his invention, still popular after all these years. Video calls used to be a thing of science fiction about 30 years ago. But today seeing the person you are talking to is a standard part of distance communication. 14% of our respondents said they would miss them the least.

E. So, what is the most prized function? The most popular function amongst children on a mobile phone is the search engine. These have become part of modern life. No more need to look through encyclopedias, dictionaries or reference books to find what you need to know. Simply "google" it. Other search engines are available too, like Yandex. But the word "google" has entered the language as a verb meaning "to use a search engine".
