Christopher Columbus was a famous explorer. He was born in Italy but lived in Spain. He was a sailor and made many sea voyages. Columbus was very interested in India and wanted to sail there to bring back a lot of gold. He knew that our planet is round, so he decided to sail west to reach the East. In 1492, he arrived in Central America. In this way, he discovered a new continent, which was later named America.

Христофор Колумб был известным исследователем. Он родился в Италии, но жил в Испании. Он был моряком и совершил много морских путешествий. Nowadays, many of them live on reservations. They try to keep their traditions, remember their language, songs, and tales. They also have interesting festivals with traditional music and dancing.

New York is the largest city of the USA. It is an important centre of culture, situated in the northeast of the country. The city lies on some islands. It is not the capital of New York State, but it is famous for its skyscrapers, streets, and avenues. Manhattan is the central part of New York. There are many famous places there, such as the Metropolitan Museum, Chinatown and Little Italy, and the beautiful Central Park. One of the most famous symbols of America, the Statue of Liberty, is also in New York.

The United States of America is one of the largest countries in North America. Its neighbour countries are Mexico in the south and Canada in the north. The USA has very different weather in different parts of the country, for example, it's warm in Florida and cold in Alaska. The country has 50 states. The largest state is Alaska, and the smallest state is Rhode Island. The USA has high mountains, like the Rocky Mountains, and long rivers, like the Mississippi. The capital city is Washington, D.C. It lies on the banks of the Potomac River. The US government and the Congress are located there.
