Dear Kate,

It was very nice to get some news from you. I’m glad that you are on holiday in India and are enjoying your trip so much. The photos you’ve sent me are wonderful. India is a very interesting and unusual country. I hope to visit it someday too.

As for me, I have to stay at home because I’ve broken my leg riding my bike. I pass the time reading a book about Mel Fisher. Have you ever heard of him? He was an explorer and a treasure hunter¹. His story sounds like a fairy tale, but it’s a real story about a man who lived in the USA in the 20^th century.

When Mel Fisher was a boy, his favourite book was ‘Treasure Island’. He dreamed about travelling round the world, exciting sea adventures and treasure. When Mel grew up, he didn’t forget about his dream. It took him 16 years of hardwork. He looked for the treasure from Spanish ships, which had sunk² in 1662, near Florida. Every day Mel said, ‘Today is the day!’ But only in 1985 Mel and his team found 40 tons of silver and gold. There were Spanish coins, gold bars, wonderful decorations and other historical things. It was a great victory for Mel and all his family. Mel’s wife and his five children shared his interest in treasure hunting and helped him a lot.

Mel gave part of his treasure to a museum which was renamed the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum. Now this museum in Florida is very popular with children and teenagers who like stories about pirates and their treasure.

Later Mel Fisher found some more ships, which were full of different historical works of art and so he has become a famous person.

Would you like to find treasure? What would you do with the treasure you found? I would like to take part in an expedition of treasure hunters. I also want to visit the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum one day. And what about you?
