I enjoy travelling. I like meeting new people and listening to their stories. The legends they tell me are sometimes just wonderful.

One of the most popular legends is the legend of King Arthur who lived in the 5th century. He was brave and wise. Was King Arthur a real person? Historians say there was no king with that name. They have found nothing about any Arthur and think he was only a myth¹.

Legends about ghosts and monsters are very popular, too. The legend of Nessie appeared in the 20th century. It says that there is a monster in Scotland’s lake Loch Ness. Some people say that they have seen a very large animal that looked like a dinosaur. I’m sure that the animal was in their imagination and is no more real than King Arthur. But the local people continue to tell their stories. They called the animal Nessie which is in fact a popular girl’s name — short for Agnes or Vanessa.

There are also a lot of legends about animals that saved people’s lives. Every town or village has their own story of this kind. I remember a story that I heard in a fishing village in Cornwall.

The story says that once upon a time there was a terrible storm in the ocean. It lasted for many days. Local people could die from hunger. An old fisherman decided to catch some fish for the village and took the cat with him. When they got into the boat, the cat started purring² to the ocean. The ocean enjoyed it very much. Soon the storm stopped. The old fisherman and the cat caught lots of fish. They saved the people of the village. The villagers still respect cats very much and nowadays cats remain the most popular pets in that place.
