Here is a short extract from the book The Cat Ate My Gymsuit by Paula Danziger. Marcy is a 13-year-old girl. One day, she went shopping with her mum and her younger brother, Stuart.

Read the text and do exercises 1–3 below the text.

“Look, Mom, let’s go shopping.”

So we went shopping, taking Stuart with us.

I hate to go shopping. I love clothes but they always look awful on me. And when you find something that you like, they never have it in your size. It’s horrible.

So there we were at the “Chubbies”¹ section. The saleslady

came up to my mother.

“Can I help you, dear?” she asked.

“Oh, isn’t she sweet? What do you want, honey?” she asked me.

“I want a pair of size five blue jeans.”

“Marcy,” my mother began.

“You’ll have to excuse my daughter. She gets upset when she shops.”

The saleslady smiled and said, “I can understand.”

We took a lot of clothes into the dressing room. Finally, I found a purple pants suit that I liked. My mother liked it, even if it wasn’t a dress.

Then we went to the jewelry² department. That’s fun. It doesn’t matter what size you are when you buy jewelry. I bought a pair of earrings, a necklace and a ring. I felt really good.

My mother bought him a pair of sneakers,³ and the salesman gave him a balloon.
