1) What geographical zones are there in Russia? (reading for specific information)

Russia has got a large territory — that’s why there are different geographical zones. The Russian Arctic is in the north of the country. There is ice and snow there during the year. Because of the low¹ temperatures all the year round there are no trees there. Most plants are different types² of mosses and lichens. Very special animals live in the Arctic; they are the polar bear, the muskox, the Arctic hare, the Arctic wolf and others.

Tundra is also a very cold northern territory but not colder than the Arctic. There are no trees in tundra, only low bushes, mosses and lichens. There you can find different northern berries. The animal world is rich¹ in tundra; the wild reindeer, the muskox, the lemming, the fox and others live there.

Taiga goes from the East-European part of Russia to the south of Siberia. Taiga is famous for its forests; there you can find different types of pine trees. The rivers and lakes are rich in fish. Taiga is the territory of the brown bear, the wolf and the moose. In the Far East taiga tigers, bears and deer live.

Steppes go from Eastern Europe to West Siberia. Because of the dry weather in summer the choice of plants is not rich; there are different types of grass and bushes in a steppe. Steppe wolves, foxes, wild cats and different rodents live there.

Desert is mostly near the Caspian Sea. It doesn’t snow in winter and summer is very hot in the desert. It rains only during a very short period of time in spring. There you can find plants that can grow² without water. The typical animals are desert foxes, snakes and lizards.
