The Prince and the Pauper (принц и нищий)

A. Tom Canty and Edward Tudor were born on the same day. Tom belonged to a family of beggars and thieves. His family was very poor. Tom slept on a dirty floor in the corner of the room. His father didn't love him and often punished him. On the other hand, Edward belonged to a very wealthy family; he was destined to be the King of England. His mother died when he was young. Like Tom, Edward had two sisters. His family and the whole kingdom loved him.

B. One day Tom was walking past the palace and through the gate he saw the boy wearing elegant clothes. It was Edward, the prince. The guards seized Tom but Edward ordered them to let him go. Edward was surprised because Tom looked like his twin. He gave Tom some food and Tom told him the story of his life. The prince became interested in his life style and they swapped their clothes. From that moment, the people around them treated them according to their changed identities.

C. The people from the streets and the guards from the palace laughed at Edward. He walked around the streets of London by himself without servants and friends. Tom's father found him and brought home, the family thought he was crazy. Tom, posing as the prince, tried to cope with the court customs and manners. His nobles and palace staff thought "the prince" had an illness because he had lost his memory. They were afraid he could go mad. They repeatedly asked him about the missing "Great Seal" (печать), but he knew nothing about it.

D. Meanwhile, news reached Edward that King Henry VIII had died and Edward was now the king. After a series of adventures Edward stopped the coronation. Tom was ready to give up the throne. Edward and Tom switched back to their original places. They found the Seal which Edward had hidden in the suit of armor (доспехи) and Tom, when he found it, used it to crack nuts. Edward rewarded everybody who helped him and named Tom the "king's ward" (a privileged position he held for the rest of his life). Edward promised to reign with kindness and change unjust laws (несправедливые законы).
