Listen to three teenagers talking about choosing a profession.

Do the task from your textbook.

When it comes to choosing a career, the pressure to follow the crowd can be immense. But what about those who are determined to be different? Three students with unusual ambitions speak about the jobs that attract them and what they expect from the twenty-first century workplace.

I want to be a dancer. Love for dance has come naturally to me, and I have always liked it. My dad is a self-employed businessman, but I don't feel like following in his footsteps, mostly because it doesn't really appeal to me. I don't think I'd be good at it. It's just not right for me. I am lucky that my family and my friends approve of my decision to become a dancer. They've seen me dance, and they think I'm quite good. They are very supportive, and it's very important to me. Talking about male and female jobs, I think everyone should be treated equally. Sometimes men get more money than women for doing the same job. It isn't fair. Also, there are people who still believe that men should work, and women should stay at home. If you ask me, men and women are good at different things. For example, men are often good at building and engineering, while women are better at communicating and doing several things at the same time. Of course, I would like to earn lots of money, but having an enjoyable job is a lot more important to me. What's the point in being stuck in a dead end job which you don't like?

I want to be a soldier and hope I'll pass the entry exam. When I was thirteen, I joined the youth organization called Army Cadets. There, I got military training, learned about discipline, and handling weapons and all that. I enjoyed it very much. Some of my friends went in and said I was good. My parents didn't object to my choice. They said it was fine with them if that was what I wanted to do. My male friends didn't think I would have the guts to go through with it, as it is mainly a male job. I am sure if I were male, they would be a bit more supportive, but the girls think it's great. But I don't really care what people think, it's just what I want to do. I don't think there are any jobs that should be just for men or just for women. Men and women should be able to do every job the same. I wouldn't like to do anything with low pay, but having a job I enjoy is more important to me, because there is no point in being in it for money if you don't enjoy it.

I'm dreaming of becoming a pop star. My mom thinks I would be able to do it, as I have a beautiful voice. So, I guess I could do it. As for my friends, they don't really care. Honestly, I don't talk much about my ambition with my friends. I'm a bit worried about them making fun of me. I don't think there's any set job for just men or just women. Sometimes, men get more money than women for doing the same job. I don't think it's fair. I believe if you do the same job, then you should get the same money. I wouldn't like to do an ordinary job like a doctor, because I don't like blood, and seeing the insides of people makes me sick. But I do want to earn lots of money. Did you see in the newspapers about Jennifer Lopez getting two million dollars for a two-hour show? I'd like to be on that sort of money. Of course, I would feel more comfortable with a job that I enjoy, but for me, the money's more important, so I would have to go with that, even if it was cleaning toilets.
