1 You are going to read an article about the gap years four young people are taking before university. For questions 1–14, choose from the people (A–D). The people may be chosen more than once. When more than one answer is required, these may be given in any order.

My career can wait

Many adventurous school-leavers don’t go straight to university. We talked to four students who are currently taking a gap year, and asked them how valuable their experiences are proving.

A Sally is working as a volunteer English teacher in a tiny school in Nepal. She teaches 6 to 13-year-olds for up to four hours a day from Monday to Friday. A teaching colleague is putting her up in his small house near the school. How is Sally benefiting from this experience? ‘There are very few resources at the school – basically just a blackboard and chalk. I need to be both imaginative and creative to keep my class interested. It hadn’t occurred to me ¹ ... I don’t know if it is really for me. Although it isn’t modest to say so, I do think I’m good at it.’

B Thomas is travelling around Latin America. He wants to work in the travel industry. ‘Knowing this part of the world will really help me.’ His travel itinerary is very strict ² ... on a monthly basis. ‘My Spanish is almost fluent now and I’m learning a bit of Portuguese from some friends I have made here in Brazil. They’re such sociable and outgoing people!’ As a lone traveller does he ever find himself in threatening situations? ‘Because I’m fair I really stand out in the crowd. But I’m used to people bothering me now ³ ... and curious locals. I don’t put myself at risk and I always try to be cheerful.’

C Why is Tamsin spending her gap year in the UK? ‘My friends are always sending me postcards of all the amazing places they’ve seen on their round-the-world tours, ⁴ ... I desperately want to get into investigative journalism, which is really competitive! I’ve been offered a place at a good university, ⁵ ... over the other people on my course. I’m basically helping with research at the newspaper – verifying facts and that kind of thing. But it will definitely improve my job prospects later. My ambition is to work for a national newspaper like The Times.’

D Emily is making a bit of pocket money this year, but is it really worth it? ‘The job sounds great when I describe it, but it’s not at all what I expected.’ Emily is working as an au pair in Paris. ‘I thought I would have the chance to practise a bit of French before my language course and spend a little time exploring. As it turns out, I’m working really long hours. My host family only wants me to speak English. I cook and clean, ⁶ ... and by the end of the day I’m worn out! I always thought of myself as patient and hard-working, but this is driving me mad. I’m leaving at the end of the month and I can’t wait to get to university! Au pairing really only helps you realize that you have to find a good job!’
