Reading

In the last century and a half, British attitudes to learning and education have changed enormously. In Victorian Britain, only the very rich got a good education. In poor families, children sometimes attended school until their early teens, but then they went to work. Girls did attend schools, but they only studied subjects that weren't too difficult for them. Scientists thought females had inferior brains, 1 ... and perhaps a little of a foreign language, while boys learnt mathematics and science subjects.

1 You are going to read an article about changes in education. Seven parts of sentences have been removed from the text. Choose from the list (A–H) the part which fits each gap (1–7) in the text. There is one extra part which you do not need to use.

A but what is relevant is how you learn

B if they have seen pictures that relate to the teaching point

C and we have been trying to put it into practice

D but you also need to find out individual

E if the teacher has explained things

F so girls were encouraged to learn art, music

G so he makes these learners sit at the front of the class

H so that they each look at a different aspect

Education has changed, but learning hasn’t

Luckily, educational experts saw the light a long time ago. Whether you're male or female is irrelevant, 2 ... . Jonathon Dempsey has been headmaster of Croftfield Secondary school for the last ten years. He began work there as a geography teacher after graduating from university. Throughout his career he has paid particular attention to the way his students behave in the classroom. In his opinion, there isn't such a thing as a good or a bad student since all learners are capable of succeeding.

Reading Task 11 → Student's Book p195

Jonathon gave this general breakdown of learning. 'Some people are visual learners, who understand better by seeing. These students understand a lesson better when they have read a handout or a photocopy or 4 ... – maps, charts, graphs or even just a photo. Others are auditory learners and they need to hear in order to understand. These students benefit from the lesson 5 ... . A handout isn't enough. They learn through discussion about the topic and reading aloud. Another important type of learner is the kinesthetic learner. This kind of student learns best through movement and activity. Often these students are very sporty or good at dance. Writing helps these students to understand or remember things better.

Jonathon admits that mostly students have a combination of all of these learning styles. However, some students are much stronger in one area than others. In order to help students as much as possible, he has introduced a programme at school which helps everyone. It's called See it. Hear it. Do it. 'It has been working really 6 ... in every subject. Let's take physics, for example. Imagine you teach the theory behind electricity. Well, the teacher creates a handout based on the subject. The class is divided into groups 7 ... . For example, where does the electricity come from? How does it get into our homes?, etc. Then the groups present their findings in front of the class. Then a little bit later in the year, the students go on an excursion to the Science Museum where they actually apply the theories that they've learnt. That way we know that we have covered every type of learner. The students love it.'

'If I see a student is struggling, I think about why. Could it be that he or she has lost interest in the lesson? Lessons need to be interesting, 3 ... students' learning styles,' says Jonathon. In a number of cases he has asked students to fill in simple questionnaires in order to work out what their strengths are. According to Jonathon, his school never concentrates on weaknesses. 'Each of the students is good at something,' says Jonathon, 'it's just a question of finding what it is and how the students can improve it.'

There's no doubt about it, Croftfield is a perfect example of how education has moved on.

1: Scientists thought females had inferior brains, so girls were encouraged to learn art, music and perhaps a little of a foreign language, while boys learnt mathematics and science subjects.

2: Whether you're male or female is irrelevant, but what is relevant is how you learn. Jonathon Dempsey has been headmaster of Croftfield Secondary school for the last ten years.

3: Lessons need to be interesting, but you also need to find out individual students' learning styles,' says Jonathon.

4: These students understand a lesson better when they have read a handout or a photocopy or if they have seen pictures that relate to the teaching point - maps, charts, graphs or even just a photo.

5: These students benefit from the lesson if the teacher has explained things. A handout isn't enough.

6: 'It has been working really well, and we have been trying to put it into practice in every subject.

7: The class is divided into groups so that they each look at a different aspect. For example, where does the electricity come from?
