1 ЕГЭ You are going to read an article about unusual natural phenomena. For questions 1–6, choose the best answer A, B, C or D.

Nature – unexplained

Have you heard of the Bermuda Triangle? It's a place off the coast of the USA where planes disappear without a trace and nobody can explain why. Did you know that there is a very similar area called the Dragon's Triangle or the Devil's Sea? This area is off the east coast of Japan. Like the Bermuda Triangle, the Dragon's Triangle is surrounded by mystery.

There have even been reports of whole islands appearing and disappearing. If I hadn't watched Lost, I would never have believed it!

There must be a logical explanation for these weird occurrences, however frightening. Let's not forget, Mother Nature is a scary lady! But you should read on before you judge.

The first weird thing about these areas is this – if you had a really long piece of string and you pushed it through the Bermuda Triangle and pulled it out the other side, guess where the other side would be – that's right, the Dragon's Triangle. The two areas align point to point through the centre of the Earth, so they're a bit like two sides of a coin.

The second odd fact is that, in both places, true North and magnetic North line up. This means that if you were flying over the area with only a compass to find your way, the compass might not be very accurate. The magnetic activity in the area could make finding your way almost impossible. Basically, the pointer on the compass would keep moving around. So it's no wonder people get lost!

But what is happening under the ocean in these areas? The underwater seascape of the Devil’s Sea is constantly changing. This might be the result of volcanic activity. Tectonic plates meet under the water here and they are constantly moving. In addition, both areas are above extremely deep sea,

or deep trenches (great holes like underwater valleys). The sea floor below the Bermuda Triangle is about 5,791 metres down, and at one point, the Puerto Rico Trench, the sea bed is at a distance of 8,229 metres. The Mariana Trench, below the Dragon’s Triangle is the deepest known point in all the seas. At one point it dips as far as 10,924 metres.

If aeroplanes or ships had gone down in these areas, rescuers would never have been able to find them, so of course there are no traces.

With sea this deep and cold sea currents meeting warm sea currents from the Gulf Stream, for example it is not surprising that the weather conditions are utterly unpredictable and extreme; when large bodies of warm and cold water meet, all sorts of strange things can happen. Thick fog, sudden enormous waves, even spouts of water which could bring down an aeroplane, great whirlpools like those in Pirates of the Caribbean and sudden thunderstorms, all of which can be explained apparently by the geographical positioning of the area.

In fact, a ship suddenly sinking can even be explained. There is a vast field of methane hydrate under the ocean. It’s like a great expanse of frozen gas. However, with sudden temperature change this can change to gas, come up to the surface and affect a ship’s buoyancy. This might cause a ship to sink and leave no trace. This gas will also explode if it comes into contact with a flame.

Unfortunately, we’ll never really know why or how certain ships and planes have vanished into thin air. In 1950, Japan declared The Dragon’s Triangle a danger zone. In 1952, they sent out a research ship. The ship, nine scientists and 22 crew members all disappeared. Evidently, there are some secrets that Mother Nature just doesn’t want to share. So we just have to rely on the limited knowledge of science that we have.

1 Why are the two ‘Triangles’ similar?

A Islands have disappeared in both areas.

B They are in the same place.

C Unexplained events have taken place in both areas.

D They are both near the coast.

2 Why does the writer say these places are like two sides of a coin?

A They are at the same point on opposite sides of the world.

B The places are extremely similar.

C The two places are connected to each other.

D They move in circles.

3 If you were flying over these areas, what would happen to your compass?

A It would stop working completely.

B It would work normally.

C It would change reading continually.

D It would be fairly accurate.

4 Why would it be difficult to find anything in these areas?

A There isn’t a map of the seascape.

B The area is too large.

C The water is far too deep.

D Things fall into deep holes.

5 According to the author, what causes gas to rise from the sea bed?

A a fire at sea

B a sinking ship

C an explosion

D a temperature increase

6 Why do you think the writer says ‘there are some secrets that Mother Nature doesn’t want to share’?

A Research attempts have been unsuccessful.

B Lots of people have disappeared there.

C These areas are a little frightening.

D There is nobody to explain these occurrences.
