Shopping is a part of our lives in the consumer society that we now live in. It is quite common to laugh or joke about being 'a bit of a shopaholic' ¹ ________. But the word 'shopaholic', like workaholic or alcoholic, implies a rather nasty addiction. For some unfortunate shopaholics, shopping isn't just a question of getting a little retail therapy or finding a good bargain, it is something they literally cannot stop themselves doing.

1 You are going to read an article about shopping. Six parts of sentences have been removed from the text. Choose from the list (A–G) the part which fits each gap (1–6) in the text. There is one extra part which you do not need to use.

Oniomania is the psychiatric term for an uncontrollable need to buy things. The word is derived from the Greek 'onios' (for sale) and 'mania' (insanity). Although oniomania hasn't yet been fully recognized as a medical problem by psychiatric societies, more and more research into the problem is showing ² _________. The satisfaction they feel when purchasing goods isn't any different from having a drink if you are an alcoholic. Addicts do these things to feel better. However, the feeling quickly wears off, and they feel guilty about what they have done. Then the whole unfortunate cycle starts again.

In the case of the shopaholic, it sounds like an excuse to buy more. I mean, let's face it, doing a lot of shopping isn't life-threatening. But what if the shopper doesn't have enough money to shop for 24 hours a day? This kind of disorder could lead to total financial ruin. In many countries where people put their

purchases on plastic, it's very easy to get your hands on a credit card. Shopping without ready cash is a dangerous game. It's too easy to forget that you're not buying with your own money, ³ ________. For someone who is addicted to shopping this is no obstacle.

But what happens ⁴ ________ and you're totally broke? A true shopaholic could have thousands of pounds worth of debt and no way of paying it back. Generally, banks aren't at all sympathetic to this kind of thing. And quite frankly, how can you prove to a bank that you have a medical condition? What successful bank would believe a customer claiming to suffer from oniomania?!

We should feel some sympathy for the oniomania sufferer. Anybody whose life is so empty and unsatisfying that their greatest form of pleasure is buying, is a sad and lonely person. It is also believed ⁵ ________ with clothes, shoes and accessories are likely to be suffering from low self-esteem.

Many people shop from time to time to cheer themselves up. But if this is a regular occurrence, then you could be on the road to an unhealthy and expensive addiction. Think of shopping in a different way. Every time you feel like you want to buy something new just ⁶ ________ or more useful than something you've already got, just say no! When customers go into shops and buy, buy, buy, they are behaving like sheep. That's the way all the people in marketing want us to behave. If you don't need it, don't buy it!
