Unit seven. Listening. Exercises two, three and four.

Host: In today's edition of Job Spot, we're going to talk about work opportunities abroad for young people. Careers expert Tim Minchel is here to answer your questions. But first, a question from me. What motivates a young person between eighteen and thirty to look for a job abroad?

Tim Minchel: Hmm, it depends. Some people do it because there are more job opportunities in some foreign countries than in their own. Or because the pay is better. Others do it to improve their long-term job prospects at home, either by learning a language or by getting useful work experience. But many do it simply to experience a different culture. In fact, I'd say that an interest in a foreign culture nearly always plays a part. People who are only interested in their own culture are unlikely to leave their country or want to live in a city where they don't know anyone.

Host: Right. The first question comes from Rob. Hello, Rob.

Rob: Hello. Is it best to arrange the job before you go or to find a job in the foreign country when you arrive?

Tim Minchel: Well, some people do go abroad without a job and find a really good one when they arrive. However, if you don't have a job before you leave, you'll almost certainly have some moments when you feel desperate or worried because you're running out of money. So, in general, I'd say it's better to find a job before you go. And if you've never worked abroad before, I'd strongly recommend that you find a job before you go. And a word of warning for everyone. If you do try to find a job before you go, you will often need to apply several months beforehand. Some job agencies generally close the application process six months before the job starts.

Host: Okay. The next question is from Emma. Hello, Emma.

Emma: Hi. In countries which ask for work permits, is it possible to find a job without a permit?

Tim Minchel: Hmm, it is possible, but it's also illegal. So, it's not a good idea. There's a good chance that you will be caught and thrown out of the country. What's more, people who don't have the correct visas or work permits will be open to exploitation from employers. For example, the pay won't be very good or you'll have to work really long hours, that sort of thing.

Host: Mm. And finally, a question from Joanne.

Joanne: I'm going to start university soon. How can I combine this with work experience abroad?

Tim Minchel: There are several ways. One is an Erasmus placement. This involves finding a job related to what you're studying. The job has to be approved by your university. In addition to other jobs, the Erasmus scheme also offers jobs as language assistants for students of foreign languages. This involves working in a school or a university as a teaching assistant in the English language department. You will give mainly conversation classes and will not normally be expected to teach grammar. Another option is IAEASTE work placements. But these are only open to students of science, engineering, technology, and architecture.

Host: And what are the advantages of work placements for university students?

Tim Minchel: Well, they'll give students useful work experience. But even more importantly, in my view, work placements will help them to mature and increase their self-confidence.
