Types of football

In its basic meaning, the term 'football' refers to a sport in which a ball is kicked around on a field to score points. Perhaps the two most common types of football are American football and association football, A

American football involves quite a lot of running with and throwing a ball and only a bit of kicking it. Players wear massive padding under their uniforms, and each game usually lasts three hours. There are several intermissions during a single game, B______. There is a great deal of player contact, and injuries are common despite protection.

Association football, known to most people as simply 'football', is played all over the world. It is played in America too, although they refer to it as 'soccer'. Association football plays according to a set time limit and players wear a simple uniform, usually a jersey, shorts and field shoes. Games do not have breaks within game play C______. An important aspect of this type of football is that players can never use their hands to move the ball during game play.

Rugby is another widely played form of football, which is divided into two types, or 'codes' – rugby union and rugby league. The two forms differ slightly in number of players, but more so in rules. Rugby union has far more rules, D______. Rugby league, with its fewer rules, has been described as being more dynamic. In fact, it's said to be the most physically demanding team sport around. Both codes of rugby are high contact sports, but players only wear light uniforms as in association football.

A lesser-known but equally lively version of football exists in Ireland. Gaelic football is similar to association football, although players are allowed to use their hands to move the ball. The rules of the sport are also quite similar to association football. Differences arise in player contact, with Gaelic football E______. It is the most popular spectator sport in Ireland.

Both Australia and Canadian have their own versions of football, known respectively as Australian football and Canadian football. The former more closely resembles association football, whereas the latter is similar to American football. The Australian playing field is unique among fields, as is it oval in shape. Canadian football is so closely related to American football F______. However, the Canadian playing field is longer and wider, and a key difference in game play means teams play less offensive moves.

1. that they are sometimes considered one in the same

2. allowing for more of it during game play

3. which means there are more injuries involved

4. and this makes it a more complex version of the game

5. in which players discuss their next strategy on the field

6. but these are not the only forms in existence

7. and last an average of one and a half hours

A wise first job

It's impossible to imagine what your first job will be like, and you'll see what I mean in a moment. It should be a welcome step to gaining your independence, but it often presents itself as a necessary one. One day your parents will stop giving you money and you'll have to bite the bullet and make your own living. Positively, it's your chance to make something out of yourself, forge ahead with a career and carve out a life. I enjoy that aspect of it, or at least the idea of it.

In practice, it translates into making responsible choices. To give you some background, my dreams are to be a successful stage actor, and I've worked hard at it, taking acting lessons, getting a degree in drama, taking any and all parts that come along my way. But work is sparse and so far pays nil. This is where responsible choices come in. For three days a week, I dress up as a giant chicken and dance round a busy street corner for seven pounds an hour.

Now, I'm not exactly sure what I'm selling. I mean, I know what they call it, and I can recognise it when I see it. It's something that resembles chicken, is deep-fried and costs just 99 pence. It's terrific for those on the go, or if you love things that taste like chicken but might not actually be chicken, or if you just don't care at all what you put into your body.

Naturally, I could have taken another job, something more 'respectable'. I saw an advert for a gravedigger for immediate hire. To that I said no. I could have held out for a job as a desk clerk, file manager, or cashier, but that's more damaging to your self-respect than being a chicken, in my opinion. The monotony of these jobs slowly drains you of your real dreams.

I could whine to my parents for money, to keep supporting me even though I'm an adult. I could make up highly creative, dramatic sob stories, and they might feel sorry for me and fork out just a bit more dough so I can avoid getting a real job for just a bit longer. But isn't that just as desperate as donning a yellow-feathered suit and enduring a bit of heat exhaustion?

No, I won't do that because I'm simply too proud. Granted, I'm purposefully ignored by every person who passes me on the street, except for the occasional obnoxious child that throws an empty chips wrapper at me, then grins. That's really happened before – I'm not kidding.

I have no idea if I've even sold one chicken strip, or a bucket of potatoes with gravy, or side of beans. I just stand, bounce round and wave at people. It's not the kind of work where you get any job satisfaction whatsoever, if you understand what I mean.

And when speaking to others about it, you try to just whisper it into the conversation. It's not for reasons of shame, but people try to encourage you by saying things like 'You're developing your people skills' and 'Surely it will apply to acting'. Their presumptions are too predictable to bear.

Really, this job represents why I have to make a career for myself in acting. If there's anything my first job has taught me, it's that I must really try hard to achieve my dreams. I know I sound like a victim – and to an extent, that is true. There just isn't a lot of theatre work these days, and for every ten rejections, there are ten acceptances. But I will do all I can to make the best of things, so until that big break comes, I'll be at the corner of Jones and Barnell, doing just that.
