Interviewer: Welcome to offline.

Interviewer: Our guest this week is Kevin Morse, the author of a report about online media. Welcome to the program, Kevin.

Kevin: Thanks.

Interviewer: Could you tell us more about how the media landscape is changing?

Kevin: Well, fewer people are reading newspapers, and at the same time, there has been a big increase in so-called citizen journalism.

Interviewer: Do you mean personal blogs?

Kevin: Yes, and social networks like Twitter and Facebook, but this new media is not directly responsible for the drop in newspaper readers. There are more news sources than ever before, including TV, mobiles, and web newspapers.

Interviewer: So, what effect does this new media have on the news?

Kevin: The big advantage of Twitter over a newspaper is speed. A piece of news can be spread to millions of people within minutes.

Interviewer: As in the Hudson River plane crash?

Kevin: Exactly. The first photo of the crash was taken by an onlooker on his mobile phone. He then uploaded it onto Twitter and it went around the world before TV crews arrived.

Interviewer: What about the quality of news?

Kevin: That is a real concern. While there are many serious blogs which analyze news issues, there is also a lot of misinformation circulating online.

Interviewer: You mean many blog entries are used to spread rumors or lies?

Kevin: Well, a lot of the information posted on blogs is not objective. Some bloggers repeat what they've read without checking their sources. The information may be correct or partially correct, but it may also be false. It's difficult to know.

Interviewer: But you are a blogger yourself, aren't you?

Kevin: There's no reason why a blog entry shouldn't be a valuable source of information. I'm just saying that you should always question what you read online.

Interviewer: What about Twitter?

Kevin: Well, you can only use one hundred and forty characters on a Twitter posting, so it can only be used for breaking news or to spread information in an emergency.

Interviewer: As it did when there were fires in California? It informed people of the location of the fires in real time, didn't it?

Kevin: That's right, and it was extremely useful. But it can also spread false rumors and even create panic in certain situations.

Interviewer: So, do you think that social networks can be dangerous?

Kevin: No, I'm not saying that, but they are what they are: social networks, not reliable sources of information. They can't replace newspapers, whether paper or online versions. But I'm sure that tweeters are aware of that. Plus, they're a great way to chat to other people.

Interviewer: Kevin, thanks for joining us today.
