The Courts of England and Wales.

In England and Wales, the criminal court system is divided into two types of courts: the Magistrates’ Courts and the Crown Courts.

If someone has found themselves in trouble with the law, for say, shoplifting, reckless driving, or some other type of misdemeanor, their case, known as a summary offense, will be held at the Magistrates’ Court.

Present in this court are two or three magistrates, who are solicitors appointed to speak about the case and weigh laws, as well as a district judge.

This type of court can give defendants a punishment of up to six months in prison, a fine of up to five thousand pounds, and community service, such as unpaid work in the community.

However, for the more serious offenders of the law who commit indictable offenses, they’ll be sent to the Crown Court.

This court hears crimes of a violent nature, as well as armed robbery and organized crime.

A significant difference between the Magistrates’ Court and the Crown Court is the presence of a jury which is lacking from the former.

This body of people will decide the guilt or innocence of the person, and the judge will handle the sentencing, which could be as much as a life sentence.
