When the music's over.

Music festivals are this year's hottest holiday destination for young people in Europe, according to reports from top travel agents.

The continent boasts some of the biggest outdoor rock events in the world, and cheaper flights have permitted growing numbers of festival-goers to combine a short break abroad with a trip to see their favorite band.

But what happens when all the fun, music and dancing is over?

Set in some of the most breathtaking countryside and seaside resorts that Europe has to offer, many festivals are a musical and tourism extravaganza.

However, as with most forms of travel, the recent fashion for festival mini-breaks has an environmental cost.

Fans often leave mountains of waste behind when they leave large musical events.

Last year, for example, the people who run Glastonbury reported that they had collected twenty thousand kilos of clothing, tents and sleeping bags that people had abandoned.

Many bands and singers are also beginning to notice that something is not quite right.

Last year, Radiohead refused to play at festivals that didn't have eco-friendly policies.

The Killers have also said they are concerned and have promised to think of ways of cleaning up their act for future tours.

It's worrying to see how much waste is left over at gigs and festivals, explained the band's bassist, Mark Stuermer.

We asked some of the big event organizers what they were doing about the problem.

Ben Challis, head of the Green Festival Awards, said that eighteen awards had been given this year for green efforts by festival organizers.

Benicassim in Spain, for example, mainly uses biodegradable or recyclable materials in site bars and restaurants.

In Denmark, the Roskilde Festival's manager told us, since we introduced a refundable deposit on drink containers, ninety-seven percent are returned.

And the organizers of the Big Green Gathering said that festival-goers had been encouraged to arrive by public transport, walk or cycle rather than drive.

Once they are on site, horse taxis and bicycle trailers move people and luggage around the Big Green, and Brig Ubridge, the festival's organizer, has warned that the party is over for people who spoil the countryside.

But is this enough?

Ben Challis admits that while many event organizers have come up with sensible plans for reducing the environmental impact of festivals, a lot more could be done.

But what about the festival-goers themselves?

The idea of combining music and a relaxing break seems fantastic, but it will only be genuinely sustainable when everyone takes responsibility for taking their rubbish home with them.
