Unit six. Listening. Exercise four.

Interviewer: Hello and welcome.

You may never have heard of the condition we're talking about today, or the person who suffered it.

When Jay-yong came to Britain to study, he was excited and curious to learn as much about his new home as possible.

After about two months, he started feeling homesick and became very negative.

He had never heard of culture shock.

Fortunately, Jay-yong went to see Simon Davis, the university counselor, whose job it is to help foreign students adapt to their new life.

Simon is here to tell us more about this condition and what students can do to reduce its effects. Simon, can you tell us what happened to Jay-yong?

Simon: He was undoubtedly suffering from a condition we call culture shock.

It's a group of symptoms that people suffer from when they move to a foreign country.

It's very common with our foreign students, so we warn them about it when they arrive.

Interviewer: So, what happens?

Simon: Well, when a foreign student arrives, they are very enthusiastic at first.

This stage may last from three to six months.

Then, fascination turns to disappointment, and negative symptoms may begin to develop.

Insomnia, homesickness, feelings of annoyance with British culture, that sort of thing.

This can even lead to depression.

Interviewer: Are some people more likely than others to suffer from culture shock?

Simon: Not really.

It's something that foreign people suffer from, but it's worse if the language of the host country is different or if the culture is very different from their home culture. Asians, for example.

Interviewer: What do you advise students to do?

Simon: The most important thing is for them to be aware that it might happen, and to know what the symptoms are.

If they recognize what's happening, they tend to cope better.

And they mustn't isolate themselves because this will increase their loneliness.

Interviewer: Is there anything practical they can do?

Simon: They should keep in touch with their family and friends and, if possible, with other students from their country.

Eating food from their own country will make them feel better.

I advise them to keep busy and go out as much as they can.

Interviewer: Does culture shock last long?

Simon: It varies, but it may last up to six months.

Interviewer: And what causes it?

Simon: It's an expression of the confusion of identity that occurs when a person is adjusting to a new culture.

Interviewer: So, what happens next?

Simon: The third stage is acceptance.

When they feel comfortable in the new country.

By this time they have usually mastered the language. This is a fantastic period of discovery.

Interviewer: And for students, it's often time to go home.

Simon: That's right.

And that's when the fourth and most unexpected stage occurs.

It's often called the reverse culture shock stage because they can then feel very uncomfortable in their home country.

In some cases, they come back to Britain, or they go on to explore other cultures.

Interviewer: So, living abroad isn't always a lot of fun then?

Simon: No, it can be difficult.

But it is also extremely rewarding.

HELPFUL HINTS

When you're pausing to think of ideas, don't drag out words or pause for too long. Fill your hesitations with expressions like the ones in the Language chunks box.

If you're having a conversation, make sure you show you're listening to your partner(s). You can do this by expressing interest, surprise, etc in what your partner says.
