A. Many animals are very busy in spring, summer, and autumn. They raise their babies, and eat as much as they can — in trees, behind thick green leaves. When the days get shorter and the weather gets colder, many trees and other plants lose their leaves. Let's take a walk in the American forest, and look up!

B. This mass of dry leaves and small branches (ветки) is a nest where squirrels (белки) rest and raise their babies in summer. In colder weather squirrels make nests in tree holes too. To build a nest, a squirrel mum and dad first make a frame out of small branches. Then they put leaves, grass and moss there.

C. Look at mistletoe (омела - растение). Many birds love to eat its berries. And some butterflies lay their eggs only on mistletoe. Out of eggs caterpillars (гусеницы) come out hungry. So they eat the plant as they grow. This ball of leaves makes a great nursery for them!

D. Can you see a grey striped nest hanging from the bare tree branch? It's about the size of a football and looks like a paper ball. It really is sort of paper. In spring a female big wild wasp (оса) called a queen begins building a place to lay her eggs. She chews up wood. Then it dries to become a 'paper' nest. The other wasps — workers help the queen make the nest larger. In autumn when the weather turns cold, the whole family leave the nest, and many of them die. So the nests you see now are empty.
