The famous novel by Daniel Defoe was published in 1719. It

described the surprising adventures of a man on a desert

island.

The story was based on real facts from the life of an English sailor,

Alexander Selkirk.

Of course, the main character of the book appeared

under a different name which became world famous. In the tradition

of the time the original title of the novel was much

longer than simply "Robinson Crusoe". The reader could learn a lot

from it — the name and the origin of the main

character, the geography of his sea voyage , the facts of the unfortunate

shipwreck , the number of years he spent on a desert island

and his happy but strange rescue by pirates.
