1) What is it famous for? (reading for specific information)

The Ostankino Tower is a television and radio tower in Moscow. Nikolai Nikitin was the chief constructor of the tower. The legend says that he created the image of the tower during one night. Since the builders finished the tower in 1967, it has been the tallest free-standing structure in Europe and it is one of the tallest in the world. It is 540.1 metres high. Between 1967 and 1974, it was the tallest in the world. Broadcasting of 4 TV channels and 3 radio channels began on the 5th of November 1967.

The tower is one of the most famous sights of Moscow and a place of attraction for millions of tourists. A lift takes tourists to the one of the highest observation decks in Europe. Here tourists can walk out onto the glass floor and enjoy the panorama of the city. There is an outdoor observation deck at the height of 340 metres. It is open from May to October if the weather is fine. Tourists can also visit the interactive multimedia complex and learn about the history of the construction of the tower. Also, tourists can learn about the attractive world of TV and radio and get a lot of information about other world towers.

Tourists can visit “The 7^th Heaven” restaurant complex. It has rotating floors. The restaurant makes a full turnover every 40 minutes. Visitors can take an audio guide with them and enjoy the tour from a comfortable armchair.

Many people think that Russia’s main television centre is in the Ostankino Tower. They are wrong. The tower is only the antenna. The main TV and radio centre is next to it.

Television centre Ostankino has been the biggest broadcasting centre in Europe for more than 50 years.

More than 15 thousand people visit the television centre daily. “Channel One”, “NTV”, “NTV+”, “Public television of Russia”, “Star”, “Carousel”, television companies “VID”, “Red square”, “AMIK”, “Red Media” and other media companies work in the television centre.
