3 Complete the sentences with the words from exercise 1.

1 Kozha promised his mum he would never be friends with a __________ like Sultan again.

2 Rakhmanov was a __________ teacher because he never lied.

3 Kozha's classmates were helping the collective farm in the __________

This is what my friendship with Sultan led me to. I was grabbed by the neck and called a thief in front of the whole collective farm, and I couldn't even say anything to stop it. My mum was right when she said that Sultan was not a good friend.

I wondered if the news would reach the school and everyone would find out that there was a thief in our class. Would Geography teacher Rakhmanov believe that I was a thief? No, it couldn't be true! If there's one person on earth who can understand me and believe me, it's him. The fact is that I have never lied to this man before, and I never will.

There was not a boy in our class who would not admit that Rakhmanov-agai was the best teacher in the whole region.

First of all, he knew everything. Whenever we read about some far-off place in a book and asked him about it, he would immediately start describing those distant lands in such detail and so vividly, it felt like he walked past them every day on his way to school.

Secondly, this man never lied to anyone.

When a new person arrives somewhere, there are always rumours. That's happened to Rakhmanov too.

The boys said he was a great war hero. Everyone believed it. I asked him about it. He laughed and said he hadn't done anything heroic. Because of his eyesight problems, he had to work in an arsenal and gave out bullets. The fact that the teacher said so honestly that he played such a small role in the war, I liked very much. I didn't think I could be like that.

Once we brought a box of caterpillars to school to scare the girls, and we scared Maikanova. No one admitted where the caterpillars came from.

Rakhmanov looked at me and said:

'And here stands our respectable Kara Kozha, thinking: it would be better, like in the old days, to confess, get a strict punishment, and that's all. But now: a school assembly, a wall newspaper, a teachers' council. You're right, Kozha, you shouldn't say anything...'

I turned so red that tears came out of my eyes and... I confessed.

Later, I begged Rakhmanov to defend me at the teachers' council. He said:

'If you want, I'll defend you. But if I were you, I wouldn't ask for that... I could stand up and say: 'Spare this boy. He's a coward and doesn't know how to take responsibility for his actions.''

Of course, I refused.

I didn't even notice how I had come to this point in life.

I promised my mum that I would never be friends with Sultan again and that I would leave for the steppe, where my classmates were helping the farm.
