How to work as an extra.

An interview with Katie Alice, a teenage extra.

Interviewer: What is an extra?

Katie Alice: An extra is a person who appears in the background of a film. Extras don't have to say anything, they just have to look natural.

Interviewer: How did you start looking for work as an extra?

Katie Alice: I joined a casting company. I had to pay a small fee and then the company added my photograph to their directory.

Interviewer: Can you register on the internet?

Katie Alice: Yes. The internet is a good way to get work as an extra. I registered on a website. I paid about twenty euros for the year. They found me work on a TV series and two films.

Interviewer: Do you have to register with a company?

Katie Alice: No. Sometimes people get work by simply showing up at a film location. Just hang around and there's a chance of getting work. I registered because I wanted to have more options.

Interviewer: Have you got any more advice?

Katie Alice: Start collecting clothes. Sometimes film companies want you to dress smartly. Other times you might have to wear sports clothes or a school uniform. In my last job, I had to wear clothes from the nineteen fifties.

Interviewer: Anything else?

Katie Alice: Develop some special skills. Sometimes filmmakers need extras who can rollerblade, dance, or climb trees. Make a list of all the things you can do well, and then learn to do some other things. I rode my horse Tammy in one film.

Interviewer: What was your best job?

Katie Alice: I had a great role in a horror film about two years ago. I was a zombie. That means I died, but came back to life. We had really cool costumes and lots of makeup. I really enjoyed that.
