What is an extra?

An extra is a person who appears in the background of a film. Extras don't have to say anything; they just have to look natural.

How did you start looking for work as an extra?

I joined a casting company. I had to pay a small fee and then the company added my photograph to their directory.

Can you register on the Internet?

Yes! The Internet is a good way to get work as an extra. I registered on a website. I paid about €20 for the year. They found me work on a TV series and two films.

Do you have to register with a company?

No. Sometimes people get work by simply showing up at a film location. Just hang around and there's a chance of getting work. I registered because I wanted to have more options.

Have you got any more advice?

Start collecting clothes. Sometimes film companies want you to dress smartly. Other times you might have to wear sports clothes or a school uniform! In my last job I had to wear clothes from the 1950s.

Anything else?

Develop some special skills. Sometimes film makers need extras who can roller blade, dance or climb trees. Make a list of all the things you can do well and then learn to do some other things! I rode my horse Tammy in one film.

What was your best job?

I had a great role in a horror film about two years ago. I was a zombie – that means I died, but came back to life. We had really cool costumes and lots of make-up. I really enjoyed that!
