Friendship bracelets.
Friendship bracelets are special bracelets that you make for a friend.
If you receive a friendship bracelet, you are supposed to leave it on your wrist until it breaks naturally and falls off. If you cut the bracelet off before this, it means that your friendship has died.
People who make friendship bracelets use thick embroidery thread. They make a series of knots in different colored threads to form a pattern.
This type of knot craft or hand weaving was popular with native Indians from Central America. They made friendship bracelets in a number of designs. The most common have simple diagonal stripes or more complex geometrical patterns.
These days, young people all over the world wear friendship bracelets. They are popular with boys and girls and especially with hippies and surfers.
One type of friendship bracelet is the Misanga. It originated in Brazil and people wear them to bring good luck.
People use three threads to plait a Misanga, in the same way as someone might plait their hair. European soccer players wear Misanga, and they are also popular among high school children in Japan.
