Past continuous: affirmative and negative

We use the past continuous to describe an action in progress in the past.

We form the past continuous with the subject + was / were + verb + -ing.

Past continuous: questions and short answers

Yes, I / he / she / it was.
No, I / he / she / it wasn't.
Yes, we / you / they were.
No, we / you / they weren't.

In questions, the order is: was / were + subject + verb + -ing.

In short answers, we don't repeat the verb + -ing.

Was it snowing?

Yes, it was. ✓

Yes, it was snowing. x

Question words

Where was she travelling?

What were you doing?

Why was he driving fast?

Who were you visiting?

Past simple and past continuous

We often use the past continuous and past simple in the same sentence.

We use the past simple for short actions. We use the past continuous for longer actions. The past simple describes an event that interrupts a longer action in the past continuous.

We use the time expressions when or while with the past continuous to mean that something took place during the time another action was happening.

We usually put when before the past simple clause and while before the past continuous clause.

He was playing golf when the lightning struck him.

The lightning struck him while he was playing golf.
