20 Read the Fact File about the animal you've written about (pages 126-127) and add some information into your Fact File. Get ready to tell the class about the animal.
Fact File: PANDA
- Pandas are some of the rarest animals in the world. They live only in a small area in the mountains of south-western China.
- There are only 500 — 1,000 pandas surviving in the wild, and the number is decreasing all the time. There are about 100 more in zoos and research stations.
- Although they are protected, pandas are still poached for their skins. Because they are so rare, their skins are very valuable.
- Pandas live in mountain forests and can only eat bamboo. As their habitat is getting smaller and smaller, pandas are in danger of dying from lack of suitable food. Zoos are making efforts to breed pandas in captivity, but this is very difficult.
- Baby pandas weigh only 100 grams at birth, so they need to be looked after very carefully. Since 1963 about 50 baby pandas have been born in captivity, and around half of them are still alive today.
Fact File: TIGER
- There are six species of tigers in existence. They are found in Siberia, India and south-east Asia. A hundred years ago tigers were common throughout much of Asia, living in many different habitats from tropical forest to semi-desert.
- Because people thought they were dangerous, tigers were hunted and trapped. Besides, tiger skins were considered very valuable.
- By 1970 there were fewer than 50,000 tigers left, and many of their habitats were destroyed.
- In 1973 “Protect Tiger” operation was launched by the Indian government: tigers were protected by law, and reserves were created to protect the species.
- Gradually numbers began to increase, and there are now some 8,000 tigers living in the wild.
Fact File: RHINO
- Most rhinos live in Africa. There are two African species: the black rhino, which lives in East Africa, and the white rhino, which is found in Southern Africa. There are also a few rhinos in Asia, mainly in India.
- At the end of the last century, numbers of rhinos dropped rapidly: there were fewer than 10,000 in the whole world, and the number is still falling.
- The main threat to rhinos is from poachers, who hunt them for their “horns”, which are in fact made of stiff hair. The horns are sold in The Middle East, where they are used to make dagger handles, and also in the Far East, where they are used in medicines.
- Trading in rhino horn is illegal, but it is still continuing. Unless more is done to protect rhinos, they will almost certainly become extinct.
Fact File: ELEPHANT
- Elephants are found in Africa and in Asia (mainly India). African elephants are slightly larger and have much bigger ears.
- Elephants in Africa are in serious danger: nearly a million have been killed in the last decade of the last century, and there were only about 600,000 left.
- In Asia, there were only about 50,000 elephants left in the wild at the beginning of this century. However, Asian elephants are used for transporting timber, so many are now born in captivity.
- Elephants are killed by poachers for their tusks, which they sell as ivory. Elephant ivory is made into ornaments, piano keys and other objects.
- In 1989 governments of 79 countries agreed to ban all trade in ivory, and this ban came into effect in 1990. Unfortunately as long as people buy ivory, poaching will continue and elephants will be in danger.

Ответ:
I have added some new information to my Fact File about the panda. Pandas live only in the mountains of south-western China. They are very rare, and there are only 500–1,000 pandas left in the wild. Although they are protected, poachers still hunt them for their valuable skins. Their habitat is getting smaller, so they are in danger of dying from a lack of bamboo. Zoos are trying to breed pandas, but it is very difficult.
