Reading for pleasure

Hannah is an English schoolgirl on holiday in Ireland. One afternoon Hannah is walking in the streets of Dublin.

She's exploring a new part of the city. She's also taking photos of an article about Dublin for The RAP.

15 O'DONOGHUE'S

CAFE

After a while she realises she's lost.

Suddenly she hears the sound of music.

ONCE I WAS LONELY AND COLD...

She turns the corner and sees a young man playing the guitar and singing. He has a beautiful voice.

GOLDEN LION

She takes a picture of the young man. She wants to ask him his name.

CLICK

But when he sees the camera, he picks up his guitar and runs away.

Hannah runs after him, but when she gets to the main road, she can't see him.

Who was he? Where can I find him again?

HANNAH AND THE MYSTERIOUS MUSICIAN

The next day Hannah went to look for the café where she saw the mysterious musician.

Now, what was the name of the café? The Golden Eagle? The Golden Lamb?

After two hours she found the café and went inside.

GOLDEN LION

Ah, there it is! The Golden Lion!

She asked the barman about the mysterious musician, and she showed him the photos of him.

Do you know this person?

Let me see that.

The barman recognised the musician. At that moment the barman saw him come into the café.

Yes, I do. He often plays outside here. Hey, there he is now.

Hannah spoke to the boy, then she bought him some soft drinks.

Excuse me.

I really enjoyed your singing yesterday.

Yes.

Oh ... thanks.

Hannah asked the boy some questions, and he started to relax.

Why did you run away yesterday?

I thought you were looking for me. I thought you were working for my parents.

But... I don't know your parents.

Gradually the boy began to tell Hannah his story.

Well, I ran away from home last week. They want me to go to university ...

Why are your parents looking for you?

Hannah and the boy sat down at the table.

I see. But ... what's your name?

... and I want to be a musician.

Mark ... Mark McGee. And what's yours?

Hannah Lawrence.

HANNAH AND THE MYSTERIOUS MUSICIAN

The next day Hannah went to see Roddy Doyle, the owner of a club called The Merry Fiddler.

Hello, Mr Doyle. I'm Hannah Lawrence.

Hi, Hannah, call me Roddy.

Hannah tells Roddy Doyle about her friend Mark McGee.

Now, what can I do for you, Hannah?

Well, I've got a friend here in Dublin, and I think he's a brilliant musician ...

Roddy agrees to give Mark an audition the following Wednesday.

Thanks very much, Roddy.

OK, Hannah. Mark can come for an audition on Wednesday.

When Hannah tells Mark what she has done, he's very angry.

FIDDLER

MERRY FIDDLER

So, you've got an audition at The Merry Fiddler on Wednesday.

Oh, no, Hannah! I'm not ready. I'm not good enough to play there.

On Wednesday Hannah and Mark go to The Merry Fiddler.

MERRY FIDDLER

I don't know if this is a very good idea, Hannah.

It's going to be all right, Mark. Just relax.

The audition goes very well ...

He's very good, Hannah. Very good, indeed.

I told you he was!

He can play here on Friday night.

Fantastic! Thanks a lot, Roddy.

Mark and Hannah leave The Merry Fiddler.

MERRY FIDDLER

Bye, now. See you on Friday.

Bye.

Hannah sees that Mark is worried.

What's the problem, Mark?

I can't play at the club on Friday night. I'm not good enough.

Yes, you are, Mark. You're a brilliant musician.

HANNAH AND THE MYSTERIOUS MUSICIAN

Hannah got to The Merry Fiddler early on the night of the concert.

That's strange! It's eight o'clock, and Mark's not here.

She decided to phone Mark.

Excuse me, could I use your phone, please?

Yes, of course. Here you are.

Hello, Mark. This is Hannah.

Why aren't you here at the club?

Well, I'm not feeling too good and ...

Hello, Hannah.

Nonsense, Mark. Come to The Merry Fiddler now!

MERRY FIDDLER

TONIGHT LIVE MUSIC MARK Mc GEE

Hi, Mark. Everything OK?

No, it's not. I really don't want to do this concert.

Mark was still very nervous about playing that evening.

But, Mark, you have to do it now! It's your only chance!

Mmm ... maybe you're right. I just wish I was a better musician.

Roddy Doyle introduced Mark at the beginning of the concert.

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen! I'd like to welcome a new young star to The Merry Fiddler this evening: Mark McGee!

Mark began to play. At first he was nervous, but then he started to enjoy himself.

And the next song I'd like to sing for you is called Rainy Thursday Afternoon.

The audience really loved him. Mark and Hannah were very happy.

Well done, Mark. That was great!

Do you really think so, Hannah?

HANNAH AND THE MYSTERIOUS MUSICIAN

The day after the concert Hannah received a phone call from Rex Marvin, the boss at Zap Records.

STRAX ZAP RECORDS

Rex introduced himself to Mark and Hannah.

Pleased to meet you, Rex. I'm Hannah Lawrence, Mark's agent. And this is Mark McGee.

Hi! I'm Rex Marvin.

Hello, Rex.

Hannah prepared a tape of Mark's music for the meeting.

STRAX ZAP RECORDS

So, have you brought me a recording?

Yes. This is a live recording we made at The Merry Fiddler.

Rex put in the cassette and pressed play ...

RAX ZAP RECORDS

What's he doing?

Oh, no! He doesn't like it.

Yea, the quality's not very good. There were a lot of people ...

When the music finished, there was complete silence in the room for a few minutes. Then Hannah spoke ...

What do you think?

I like it — it's original — fresh, just what we're looking for at Zap Records. You're going to be a star!

Oh! I ... er ...

Rex offered Mark a recording session.

STRAX ZAP RECORDS

Can you come for a recording session next week?

Well, yes, I think I ...

When Mark and Hannah left Zap Records, Hannah thought it was time to talk to Mark about his parents.

DS

That was fantastic, Hannah! You were brilliant!

Thanks, Mark. Now, why not go and see your parents?

All right. I'll go and see them now.

It was time for Hannah to say goodbye to Mark.

Phone me after the recording session, Mark.

But ... Aren't you going to be there, Hannah?

Oh ... Well, thanks for everything.

No, Mark. I'm going back to Bristol tomorrow.

My pleasure, Mark. And think of me when you're a star!
