Clockwork Radio

Do you know what a clockwork radio is? Clockwork radio appeared in 1994 thanks to British inventor Trevor Baylis.

Trevor realised that many people in Africa were cut off from the outside world. In Europe and North America people could get information and entertainment by radio, television and the Internet. But many homes in African countries had no electricity.

Even batteries were either very expensive or impossible to find, and many homes were completely isolated as a result. Baylis wanted to help people in this situation, so he invented the world's first clockwork radio. You just wind it up for 20 seconds, like you wind a mechanical clock, and you can listen to it for 40 minutes. And of course it didn't need electricity or batteries!

For every 100 sold, 13 radios were donated to charities, because Trevor wanted to help people in Africa.
