Moscow Zoo

Did you know that Moscow Zoo is the oldest in Russia and one of the oldest in the world? It was opened in 1864. It is also the biggest in Russia; its territory is 22 hectares.

Today the Zoo is home to over 1,100 species and more than 7,700 animals. The collection includes animals from all over the world. Many of these species are endangered.

An animal is endangered when there are not many of its kind alive and it could soon become extinct. At Moscow Zoo you can see Siberian tigers, giant pandas and spectacled bears. All these animals are among the most endangered species in the world.

Giraffe Samson was born in 1993 in St Petersburg Zoo. It was moved to Moscow Zoo when it was still very young. Samson is one of the kids’ favourite. It lives in a historical building, one of the first built on the territory of the Zoo in 1892. The building is now called “Giraffe’s House”. For many animals cages are replaced by enclosures which recreate the animal’s natural environment. This gives a better lifestyle to the animals and a more realistic experience to the visitors. The Zoo also has a beautiful garden, as well as innovative zoo buildings which house many animals in winter.
