Many people overseas think that "English" is the same as "British". It is not! People who are English are from the country of England, and it's only one of the four countries of the UK. All UK citizens, whether they live in Scotland, Wales, England or Northern Ireland, can be called British. They all have British passports. I haven't got a passport yet, but I'm sure I'm British (my citizenship), and I'm Scottish (my nationality). But I'm not English!

Right you are! England is only one of the UK countries. The Scots and the Welsh sometimes get angry when they are referred to as "English". I'm a Dubliner, I'm Irish, I live in the Republic of Ireland, and it's an independent country, not part of the UK. And yet some people refer to me as "English", probably because I speak English and consider it my native language. 94% citizens of the Republic speak English and only 36% speak Irish — still we are the Irish.

Although everyone in the UK has British citizenship, they have different nationalities. UK citizens state their national identity as English, Scottish, Welsh or Irish. I'm Welsh. We speak Welsh at home, and English is my second language. National identity and citizenship are not the same thing in many countries of the world. I've read that there are over 150 nationalities in Russia, and they are all Russian citizens!

A My name's Sally Collins and I'm from Dublin in Eire. I wrote this history of my country for a school project.

Before 1570 Ireland was an independent nation. Today there are two parts of Ireland: Eire in the south, and Northern Ireland which is part of the United Kingdom. At the moment there is a violent conflict in Northern Ireland between Catholics and Protestants. Here are some significant dates in the history of Eire.

English "colonisation" of Ireland:

1570 Queen Elizabeth I of England gave Irish land to English people.
1649 Oliver Cromwell invaded and colonised Ireland.
1690 The Battle of the Boyne.
1801 The Act of Union. Ireland officially became part of Britain.

The Irish movement for independence:

1917 The Civil War started. Eamonn de Valera was the Catholic Leader.
1920 The Government of Ireland Act. The English government divided Ireland into North and South.
1921 First Northern Irish Parliament.
1926 Irish Free State formed.
1938 De Valera won the elections and there was a new constitution. The Republic of Eire was formed.

B I'm Robert Taylor and I'm from Cardiff, the capital of Wales.

Wales is to the west of the English Midlands. It occupies an area of 20,779 square kilometres and has a population of 3,063,456.

Many Welsh people speak Welsh as their first language and English as their second language. There are many schools where students study all subjects in Welsh. Many Welsh people want independence from England.

Welsh is very different from English — here are some examples:

English: library no smoking Wales
Welsh: pryfysgol dym ysmygu Cymru

Agriculture and tourism are the principal industries now. Wales is a very beautiful country and has two famous national parks — Snowdonia in the north and The Brecon National Park in the south. Every year there are many cultural festivals with poetry and music competitions in Wales — all together called "Eisteddfod". The Welsh are also famous for their national sport — rugby.

C My name's Linda Macintosh and I'm from Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland.

Edinburgh has a population of 482,640 people and is in the south of Scotland. The city of Glasgow is the biggest city in Scotland with 598,830 inhabitants.

Scotland is very beautiful. The highest mountain of the British Isles is in Scotland. Its name is Ben Nevis (1,344 metres). There are some famous and beautiful lakes like Loch Ness with its famous monster. There are also many beautiful islands near the coast of Scotland, for example Skye, the Orkney Islands and Islay.

Scotland is famous for its production of wool. There are many famous festivals in Scotland every year including the International Festival in Edinburgh in August, and the Highland Games in Braemar in September. The men wear the traditional costume of Scotland — the kilt and sporran. The traditional instrument of Scotland is the bagpipes.

В чем разница между национальной идентичностью и гражданством в Великобритании? В Российской Федерации?

Ответ:

In the UK, citizenship is British. It means a person is a citizen of the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland) and has a British passport. National identity is different; a person can identify as English, Scottish, Welsh, or Northern Irish. So, someone from Scotland can have British citizenship and a Scottish national identity.

In the Russian Federation, citizenship is Russian. However, there are over 150 different nationalities. This means a person is a citizen of Russia, but their national identity can be different, for example, Tatar or Chechen, while they are still a Russian citizen.

В Российской Федерации гражданство — российское. Однако существует более 150 различных национальностей. Это означает, что человек является гражданином России, но его национальная идентичность может быть другой, например, татарской или чеченской, при этом он все равно остается российским гражданином.
