Part IV

The Ghost told Virginia about his wish and asked for her help. He could be forgiven and put to rest only if a pure, kind, gentle sweet soul full of Love prayed for him. Virginia agreed to help.

The next morning Mrs Otis was greatly alarmed when Virginia did not appear. Mr Otis rode his horse across the countryside to search for her. He could not find her. Then, at midnight, a panel at the top of the stairs flew open. Virginia came out looking very pale and tired.

“My child!” cried Mr Otis. “Where have you been?”

“Papa,” said Virginia quietly, “I have been with the Ghost. He is dead now, and you must come and see him. He had been very wicked, but he was really sorry for what he had done.”

Virginia led him down a secret corridor. Finally they came to a great oak door. Virginia opened it. They found themselves in a small room. A huge iron ring was attached to the wall. A chain led from the ring to a skeleton. The Otis family found the body of Sir Simon. Virginia explained that Sir Simon was locked in this room long ago. “Now he can rest,” she said. “God has forgiven him.”

Virginia got married in a few years’ time and told her husband the whole story. She said, “He made me see what Life is, and what Death is, and why Love is stronger than both.”

Ответ:

Virginia saved Sir Simon because she was pure, kind, gentle, and sweet. The text says that only a pure soul full of Love could save him. She is a helpful and sympathetic person because she listened to the Ghost and agreed to help him. She is also brave because she went with the Ghost to the secret room. From the vocabulary list, I can describe her as kind, sensitive, sweet, understanding, helpful, sympathetic, brave, and pure.
