4 A. Read the text and say what makes English the global language of the 21st century.

1. Nowadays many scholars consider English as a truly global language. It means that

2. hundreds million people use the vocabulary of English as a mother tongue that is about

3. one tenth of the world's population, scattered across every continent. Three quarters of

4. the world's mail and its telexes and cables are in English. So are more than half the world's

5. technical and scientific periodicals: it is evidently the language of technology.

6. 80 per cent of the information stored in the world's computers is in English. It is the

7. language of sports and glamour. It is the official voice of the air and of the sea. English

8. has few rivals and no equals. But will it be the same in the future?

9. The proportion of the world's population that grows up speaking English is in decline.

10. Mandarin Chinese, as it is claimed today, may become the next “must learn” language.

By 2050 it is predicted more people will speak Chinese, Hindi, Urdu¹ or Arabic as a first language than English. So, some language experts say English will probably fall in importance within the next 50 years.

For the young generation of 15- to 24-year-olds, English will be in the fourth place in the language “league”. Chinese will dominate, with 166 million native speakers aged 15 to 24. However, the next most-spoken language would be Hindi/Urdu with 73–74 million young speakers, followed by Arabic (about 72 million). The number of native English speakers aged 15 to 24 is expected to be 65 million.

According to the text, English is the global language of the 21st century because hundreds of millions of people use it as a mother tongue across every continent. Three-quarters of the world's mail and cables are in English, as are more than half of the technical and scientific periodicals. It is the language of technology, with 80% of computer information stored in English. Furthermore, it is the language of sports and glamour and the official voice of the air and sea.

I think the future of the English language will remain strong, even if its position changes a little. The number of people who speak English as a native language might become a smaller percentage of the world's population, just like the text says. However, I believe it will remain the most important "must-learn" foreign language because it is essential for international jobs and communication. It will definitely stay as the main language of science and technology; too much important information is already in English. It's also hard to imagine it not being the language of sports and glamour, because of things like Hollywood movies and the Olympic Games. As the language of trade and world communication, its role is probably the most secure. It's the language everyone agrees to use for business and on the internet to talk to people from other countries.

Я думаю, что будущее английского языка останется сильным, даже если его положение немного изменится. Доля людей, для которых английский — родной язык, может стать меньшим процентом от мирового населения, как и говорится в тексте. Однако я считаю, что он останется самым важным «обязательным для изучения» иностранным языком, потому что он необходим для международной работы и общения. Он определенно останется основным языком науки и технологий; слишком много важной информации уже существует на английском. Также трудно представить, что он перестанет быть языком спорта и гламура из-за таких вещей, как голливудские фильмы и Олимпийские игры.
