Novosibirsk State University is not the oldest but one of the best-known universities in Russia. It was founded in 1958 soon after the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences was established. The first students started their education in the new university in September, 1959. Actually, the first lecture was delivered in the building of a newly-built school. There was only one department of natural sciences that united mathematics, physics, chemistry, geology and mechanics. Later in the 1960s several new departments were founded.

From the very beginning the university focused on training highly qualified professionals for science and education. First alumni graduated from the university in 1963 and there were 60 of them. Now there are more than 50,000 alumni of the university, among them over 1,600 Doctors and 48 members of the Academy of Sciences. Many graduates were awarded prestigious scientific prizes in different fields.

At present students can choose between a wide variety of departments. Some of them are old, where young people study mathematics, physics, IT, natural sciences, geology and economy. And at the beginning of the 21st century several new departments were founded where students study philosophy, psychology, foreign languages, law, journalism and medicine.

The unique characteristic of the university is competitive selection and training of talented young people by scholars who are actively involved in scientific research. Besides that, education includes winter and summer schools, undergraduate and post-graduate programmes, careers centre and a lot of other educational opportunities.

Now Novosibirsk State University is one of the best in the country aiming at becoming one of the top 100 universities in the world.
