Unit two. Listening. Exercises two, three and four.

Interviewer: Now we're going to speak to a university student who has just set up a news website especially for young people aged between seventeen and twenty-five. Liz Torrance, welcome to the program.

Liz Torrance: Thank you.

Interviewer: So, Liz, why did you decide to set up this website?

Liz Torrance: Well, mainly because there weren't any good news websites for the young adult age group.

Interviewer: I see. But why do you think it's necessary to have a site specifically for young adults? I mean, why don't they just use ordinary adult news sites? Is it because the content of these sites is too serious?

Liz Torrance: Mm, no, not at all. Many people in the seventeen to twenty-five age group want serious news. So, on my site, although we include lighter topics, we don't dumb down the news at all. The problem with most news sites and radio and TV news as well is that they present the news from the perspective of older people. They don't give enough space to the opinions of younger people, and they often give a very negative image of young people.

Interviewer: A negative image. Can you give me an example?

Liz Torrance: Well, most news sites have articles about skinhead groups, about young people drinking huge amounts of alcohol or having illegal car races. That type of thing. They don't give enough information about young people who work with charities and non-governmental organizations, NGOs, or who have ideas about improving society. In many countries, more and more young people are joining NGOs, but we don't hear enough about it. On our news site, we cover all the negative things that young people do, but we also try to give much more attention to the good things.

Interviewer: Mm. Did you have any technical difficulties when you set up the website?

Liz Torrance: Yes, there were two issues. Firstly, our firewall rejected some of the contributions that were sent in from other computers. This was easy to solve. We just changed the security configuration on our firewall. Secondly, some users' computers wouldn't accept some video and MP three files because the bandwidth wasn't big enough. To get round this problem, we posted some instructions on our website on how to compress files so they don't take up too much bandwidth.

Interviewer: Ah. Can you explain the content of your website?

Liz Torrance: Well, the site is divided into four sections: International news, sport, society, and national news. I mean the national economy, national politics and so on.

Interviewer: Mm. But I always thought that young people weren't interested in politics.

Liz Torrance: Well, you can get them interested. We make politics more interesting for young people by including their opinions and by showing how political decisions will directly affect them.

Interviewer: Ah. One last question, Liz. Would you recommend that people over thirty look at your website?

Liz Torrance: Yes, why not? They certainly won't enjoy all the content, but it would help them to get a different view of young people.
