Going home!

In 1939, war was a threat and work was difficult to find. I was far from home teaching at a boys’ boarding school. It was a special school. Rich families used to send their children there to become leaders. No doubt the fathers wanted only the best for their sons. I missed my wife, but I was happy with the post. It paid well and I sent the money home. I didn’t need it. The school provided a bed in a small but comfortable attic room and I had three good meals a day.

Germany and over the border to my wife in Austria. I had no time to waste. Armed with a small backpack of food, a blanket and a compass, I set off in the direction of an uninviting mountain range.

The students were well-fed too. The teachers were strict, but never unkind to them. They slept in dormitories – four to a room. Although they were 14 to 18-year-olds, some of the boys would get homesick. I could understand this as I myself had pleasant memories of my own merry household where my wife and I used to share the chores.

I was not accustomed to such hardship, but somehow I survived. Every day I focused on walking steadily in the right direction, and eating and drinking as little as possible. At night, I tried to find shelter. Sometimes I would pass tiny hamlets of farmhouses where I could get lodging for a night. Those were lucky nights when I enjoyed the luxury of a bed and a decent meal. People were curious. Why wasn’t I wearing a uniform? But they were always willing to help when I told them what I was doing.

Then the Second World War broke out. There was panic within the school. It was closing down and all the boys were leaving. Parents were coming to collect their sons and leaving hurriedly. I didn’t have a job anymore and any male of an appropriate age would be forced to join the army – even an Austrian. My wife had recently given birth to a little girl. I had only seen photographs of my daughter and now I longed to hold her and put her to sleep in her little cot. I had little money, but I had to get out of

As I moved higher up into the mountains, the farmhouses disappeared. I slept under the stars with a small fire next to me to keep the animals away. It was lonely, frightening and I often had difficulty sleeping. I dreamt with my eyes open of our cozy cottage, with its open fireplace. A pot of food would be cooking and my wife’s kindly voice would be calling me in from our well-tended garden and vegetable plot. The shutters would be newly painted a pretty blue and inside it would always smell of homemade cakes and jam. That was how it used to be when I was still working in Austria. I didn’t know what I would find on my arrival.

Reading Tasks 12–18 → Student’s Book p196

The image of my home was the only thing that kept me going through ten difficult days. As I approached our small village I imagined having a bath, eating from a plate and drinking from a glass. Our garden looked strangely lifeless. I pushed open the front door, but the place stood vacant and bare. My wife and child were no longer there. A crumpled piece of paper lay by the door. A name was written on it.
