Myriam watched open-mouthed as Becky rolled up the dress and pushed it right down into her bag.

'What are you doing?' hissed Myriam. 'You can't do that! It's shoplifting!'

Becky gave Myriam a sly smile, picked up the rest of the clothes and made her way out of the fitting rooms. She handed the few unwanted clothes to the shop assistant working at the fitting room without a word and carried on walking towards the entrance of the shop. What could Myriam do? She decided to do nothing and followed in silence.

As they approached the security guard standing by the exit, Myriam could feel herself starting to sweat. She tried hard not to look suspicious, and even made herself smile at the security guard.

A few doors down from the shop, Becky started laughing uncontrollably. Myriam didn't even want to look at her. She was fuming with rage, all of it directed at her best friend. Yet, she didn't immediately have the courage to say anything. Becky had always been the dominant one in their friendship. Myriam hadn't minded the bossiness and being told what to do. It was harmless. But lately, for some reason, Becky's behaviour had changed. Graffiti at school, she had had a fight with another student and got suspended. She'd even vandalized someone's bicycle. Her behaviour was delinquent, but shoplifting was different. That was criminal. Myriam thought about what her mother would say if she knew. Myriam would never be allowed to spend time with Becky again.

'I could have got caught, Becky!' said Myriam after a long silence. 'You shouldn't have put it into my bag. That was really crazy of you. If we had got caught I would have been arrested, not you!'

'Oh, don't be ridiculous, I've managed to nick loads of things from that shop. They don't even tag their clothes! And anyway, you said you really liked the dress. Call it a gift from me.'

'I don't want it, Becky. It's not yours to give. And anyway, whether or not you've stolen in that shop before is not the point. I don't want to be involved in that kind of thing. It's not clever. In fact, I think you're really idiotic! We're not kids anymore. If you get caught, you'll get a criminal record. Shoplifting is illegal. You won't get into any university.'

'Huh, do you really think I care? Look, if that's the way you feel just leave me alone.'

Becky stormed off down the road in the direction of Bentley's department store. Myriam couldn't stand her and thought about not going to school with her the next day. But if she hadn't said anything, Becky would have thought that Myriam was agreeing to take part in things like shoplifting. Who knew what else it could lead to?

Myriam could see Becky disappearing into Bentley's. 'I might as well go and reason with her,' she thought.

Becky was looking through the clothes in the Young Designers department. Myriam decided to observe her from a distance. If she tried to steal again, Myriam would say something. Becky went into the fitting rooms carrying two items of clothing. Myriam waited for her to come out. When she did she had the same two items in her hand. Myriam breathed a sigh of relief. Becky was leaving the shop. Myriam thought she'd try and catch her outside. Surely she could reason with her. Maybe she'd already got her thinking.

Myriam had one foot on the pavement outside the store when she felt a hand grip her shoulder.

'Miss, not so fast. Please could you open your bag?'

Panic showed on Myriam's face as she remembered Becky pushing the dress to the bottom of her bag. The shop must have realized after all and the security guard had followed them to Bentley's.

Myriam looked guiltily at the security guard. He gave her a knowing look.

'Come this way, please,' he said. 'You'll need to accompany me to the Store Manager's office while we call the police.'

Myriam's heart sank. How was she ever going to explain this?
