Eight-minute mini-lessons boost learning

Just imagine: it's about twelve o'clock on a typical morning at school. The school day ¹... yet, and you probably can't wait for the next break, can you? But how many breaks have you already had today? One? Two? How about 15? That may sound ridiculous, but for pupils of Wythenden High School in England, it's quite normal to have 15 breaks in a morning. That's because they ²... a new educational method called 'spaced learning'. The pupils ³... normal lessons of 50 minutes. Instead, they've been having short bursts of learning that last only eight minutes. After every eight minutes, the ⁴... take a break for ten minutes. They play sport or word games and then start again on ⁵... next eight-minute lesson. 'Spaced learning' is based on scientific research that was carried out a few years ago in the USA. The research ⁶... that memory develops best with short bursts of learning. But has the new method helped Wythenden pupils? 'Certainly it has,' says Ron Mackinly, the school's headmaster. 'We've been using “spaced learning” for two years, and the pupils have never done ⁷... in maths and science. It's an amazing improvement.' So there you have it! And now ... I think it's time for a break, don't you?
