Host: Well, that was Mark's choice for our film club and you have to admit that it was an excellent choice. Mark, can you tell us, first of all, why you chose it?

Mark: Well, the way I see it, film should be about entertainment. I really don't see the point of intellectual films. If I want to be educated, I can go to the library. And you can't deny that Independence Day is entertaining. I'd like to know what you all think. Yes, Carol.

Carol: Well, to be frank, I thought it was awful. The whole fourth of July, America saving the world thing.

Carol: The truth of the matter is that it gives a false view of the world. As far as I can see, the Americans think the rest of us are all useless.

Host: That might not necessarily be true. You see, I think that the film was actually laughing at itself. Yes, in one sense, it was a typical Hollywood blockbuster, but on the other hand, there was a lot of humor there.

Carol: Well, I didn't laugh.

Mark: Oh, come on, Carol, lighten up. I think it goes without saying that a film which shows a spaceship with manual gear levers is not taking itself too seriously.

Mark: Yes, you have to bear in mind that despite the so-called pro-Americanism, the bad guy, apart from the aliens, was the very pro-war defense chief.

Carol: But it was so unrealistic.
