Track sixty-five.

Host: A man was found in the middle of a field. He was holding a broken match. What happened?

Dan: Mmm, this one's tricky.

Dan: Perhaps he had a bomb, and when he lit it, it exploded too soon and killed him.

Speaker: Yes, but why was he in a field?

Dan: Well, he might have been testing the bomb there.

Speaker: But if the bomb had exploded, there wouldn't be much of him left, let alone a matchstick.

Dan: Yes, I suppose so.

Speaker: Anyway, we don't know how he died. It might have been an accident or he may have been murdered.

Dan: Yes, he could have been stabbed or strangled. Mmm.

Speaker: Shall we ask for a clue?

Host: All right. John, was he murdered?

John: No, he wasn't.

Host: Right. So it could have been an accident.

Speaker: We'd better check again. John, was it an accident?

John: Mmm, it's a bit difficult to answer that. Think about the broken match.

Speaker: Yes. How does the match fit in?

Dan: Hang on. What if he fell from a plane? He might have been training to be a parachutist and his parachute didn't open. Or he may have been pushed.

Speaker: But he wasn't murdered, remember?

Dan: Oh, this is so frustrating!

Speaker: Let's ask if he jumped from a plane.

Dan: Or, it could have been a balloon.

Host: A balloon? Okay, let's ask John. John.

John: The answer is yes.

Host: Great. But what about the broken match?

Speaker: Wait. Was the match completely broken? I was thinking it was half broken, you know, bent in the middle. But it could have been broken into two pieces, and he only had half of it.

Dan: But why would you break a match in half?

Speaker: To play a game?

Dan: Or to draw lots. Like when the person who gets the shortest stick has to do something awful?

Speaker: Right. Okay. Mmm, so there must have been something wrong with the balloon. It might have been falling for some reason. It could have been damaged by a bird or maybe it was too heavy. They might have been approaching some mountains and were going to crash. Somebody had to jump out to make the balloon lighter, so they drew matchsticks to decide.

Dan: No, that can't have been the reason. It's crazy. The man must have jumped. Perhaps he lost all his money or was unlucky in love.

Host: But it's the right answer, Dan.

John: What? Really? Yes. The balloon was too heavy and was going to crash. Unfortunately, the man drew the short match and had to jump.

Dan: I don't believe it! It was just a crazy thought.

Host: That's lateral thinking for you. You're both very good at it. Well done.
