Chris: Hi, Mum! I'm at home.

Mother: Oh, hi, Chris! You are late today. Are you hungry?

Chris: No, I'm not. I can have dinner at six when dad comes home.

Mother: Very good. Then you can do your homework, Chris, and watch television after dinner.

Chris: Yes, Mum, but... can you help me? I don't understand the spelling rule².

Mother: Oh, sorry, son. I can't help you now, I'm cooking. Ask your brother.

Chris: Dan, could you help me with this spelling rule?

Dan: Sorry, Chris. I'm busy. I'm doing a very difficult exercise.

Chris: Well, but who can help me?

Dan: I think, grandad can. He knows all the spelling rules.

Chris: Who? Grandfather?

Dan: Yes, he does. Go and ask him.

Sue: Hi, Betty! It is so good to have you for lunch. How are you? How is John? How are David and Sally?

Betty: Hello, Sue! Not so many questions at once², dear. David and Sally are fine. John was ill but he is getting better now. I'm very busy. You can say that my life is not easy at all.

Sue: Is it not? Can I help?

Betty: Oh, thank you, dear. I'm all right. I'm just trying to keep fit, do morning exercises every day. You know I am keeping to a diet.

Sue: Are you successful?

Betty: I think I am but I don't know. I only feel I'm always busy.

Richard: Good morning, Mum!

Mother: Morning! How are you?

Richard: I'm fine, thanks. Where is dad? It's quarter to eight. He usually leaves the house at this time.

Mother: He is still upstairs, in his bedroom. I think he is ill.

Richard: Oh, no. Are you OK, Mum?

Mother: Yes, I'm OK. Tea or coffee, dear?

Richard: Coffee, please, Mum.

Mother: Black or white?

Richard: White, please. I like my coffee with milk.

Mother: But I like drinking coffee without it.

Richard: What about Joan, Mum? Where is she?

Mother: It's Friday today, Richard. Joan is at school having her PT class.
