Our Blue Planet

1) Do you know how old the earth is? Some curious pupils will say that they do, others may not be sure of the fact. So, what is the age of the planet we live on? Different scientists and astronomers give different figures. But most of them agree that it is about 4.54 billion years old. They also agree that our planet used to be quite different from the way we know it now. It used to be a continuous mass of land. As you see, it took the earth a lot of time to become what it is.

2) Let's continue collecting information about the earth. Astronauts and cosmonauts who had their voyages into space to explore it say that our planet looks beautiful from the board of a spaceship. And many of them call the earth a blue planet. It is not difficult to guess why. There is so much water on it — oceans and seas, lakes and rivers. The water gives the earth its beautiful blue colour.

3) Nowadays scientists say there are five oceans on our planet. They are the Atlantic Ocean that separates the Old World from America, the Pacific Ocean that is the largest ocean, the Indian Ocean which is the third largest ocean of the world and the Arctic Ocean which is the smallest and is situated at the North Pole. The fifth ocean is the Southern Ocean near the Antarctic.

4) There are six continents on the earth. Eurasia is the largest. The Urals separate Europe from Asia. You can find a lot of countries in each part of this continent. Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Greece, Spain are in Europe as well as Finland and Poland. China, India, Vietnam, Japan are in Asia. Russia and Turkey are situated both in Europe and Asia. People of different nationalities live in different countries. Their national flags and national languages are also different.

5) Australia is not a very big continent. Some people even say that it is the earth's largest island, not a continent. But whatever name you give to this land, it is one of the most unusual places in the world. There is only one country there — Australia. Its capital is Canberra. Do you know where Australia is? Can you show it on the map?

6) There are more than 40 countries in Africa. The Dark Continent, as people sometimes call it, is a very interesting place, and lots of tourists come to explore it and go on safari [sə'fa:rı]. During these trips through wild country especially in East or Central Africa, explorers of the continent hunt and photograph big African animals. They also make photos of the national parks, which are especially beautiful when the sun sets or rises.
