24 Read the text and complete the statements after it.

Nowadays we can often hear that the planet where man has lived for many centuries is in danger. A lot of plants, birds and animals are disappearing. Can people do anything to stop this process ['prǝuses]? Sometimes it's impossible. For example, we will never see a dodo again. These large quiet birds lived on the island of Mauritius [mɔ:'rıfəs] in the Indian Ocean. When Dutch¹ ships came to the island in the 17th century, they found a lot of big fat birds there. They were dodos. Dodos could not fly and were not afraid of people. It was easy to catch them. Visitors to the island killed all the birds. By the year 1690 there were no dodos. Nowadays people can see dodos only in the pictures. Passenger pigeons² are another kind of bird that has disappeared. And we will never see this North American bird on the earth again.

Tigers and elephants are among disappearing animals. These big wild animals are often dangerous; they can kill smaller animals and even people. But in the 20th century so many people hunted tigers and elephants for fun and for their beautiful skin or for tusks³, that with each year their number became fewer and fewer. The result is really sad.

There are not many Indian tigers left on the earth. The same is true about African elephants. You can mainly see them in African parks, though in the 19th century there were lots of them on the Dark Continent. But in many cases we can help animals to survive⁴ though there are few of them on the planet. Nowadays in many countries people try to protect and save animals. They organize different clubs and societies like "Save the Animal Life of the Planet". They ask their governments for help. The situation with some animals is getting better, but alas, others are still disappearing from the earth. Modern life is not good for them. The air in many cities is not fresh; the water in rivers, lakes and seas is often dirty and undrinkable; people do a lot of harm to nature, and in many places plants which are important for animals and birds disappear. You can find long lists of animals in danger in the Red Book. There are names of fish and other sea animals there, too. We must do all we can to save all the animals and plants on our planet and keep the earth beautiful.
