If you think that a birthday celebration is a cake, blowing out candles, the Happy Birthday song and presents, you may be wrong. Birthday celebrations are hardly similar around the world and there are places where people do not mark birthdays at all.

The tradition began in ancient Egypt where people gathered to celebrate birthdays together. In some European countries, a birthday is not as important as a "name day" – the day of a saint from whom the name comes. People put a flag outside the house. Parents secretly put presents at night around the child's bed.

In Brazil, the guests pull the ears of the person who celebrates their birthday because long ears mean long years of life.

In Australia and New Zealand, the traditional treat is white bread with butter and sweets on top. Birthday food in China is very long spaghetti. Think and say why.
