The Great Escape

Part II

The next morning there were a lot of tourists with cameras in the Tower. But the four ravens were glad to see the people. The more people were in the fortress, the better chance they had to escape.

They saw a large group of tourists with heavy bags. The bags were full of souvenirs and people put them down.

“Bags! I have a plan. Let’s get into the bags,” Walter told the ravens.

Walter, Mary, William and Anne walked along the ground near the tourists’ feet. William jumped into one of the bags. Mary got into another bag. Walter also found an open bag and got into it quietly.

Anne saw the bag she wanted to jump into. She tried to get in but landed1 near the woman’s leg and scratched2 her with her beak. “Help! Help!” the woman cried.

Two Beefeaters ran to the woman. Anne ran away quickly. Walter got out of his bag and ran after Anne.

Suddenly a tourist saw William inside his bag. He cried, “There’s a raven in my bag.” William jumped out and ran as fast as he could.

All the tourists took their bags. A woman saw Mary and began to cry, “A raven! Help! A raven!” Mary jumped out of the bag and ran away.

The four ravens stayed behind the wall for the rest of the day.

“I think we’d better stay in the Tower and just forget about our plan,” Mary said. Anne, William and Walter agreed with her.

The ravens learned not to pay attention to the cameras, the noise or the children. The friends were happy to be together in the Tower again.
