Reading Class Two

Read the second part of King Arthur's story once and choose the appropriate names for its two chapters.

A. The Sword in the Stone

B. London

C. The Stranger

D. The Young King

1) Some days later the travellers arrived in London. There were a lot of warlords and their men in the streets of the city. Their faces were cold and unfriendly: it was clear that none of them trusted the others.

Sir Ector and Kay left Arthur to look after the horses and went to find out what was going on. Soon Arthur saw a dark figure of a man who was walking along the street. The man was wearing a cloak with a hood, so Arthur could not see his face. The boy followed him, but the mysterious man quickly disappeared behind one of the houses like a ghost. Arthur came back to the horses and saw at once that Kay's sword was not in its place!

A minute later Kay returned and said, "Father sent me for my sword. Where is it?" Arthur didn't know what to say. Kay was very angry and shouted, "You are my squire! You must look after my weapons! Go and find me another sword or I'll tell father that you are useless!"

a cloak [klouk]

a hood [hud]

a campfire ['kæmpfaiər]

Arthur began walking through the streets of London looking for the sword. It was getting dark. There were campfires everywhere with warriors sitting around them. Arthur felt very unhappy. He didn't know where to find Kay's sword or another sword to replace it.

a pavilion [pə'viljən]

Suddenly he saw the same dark ghostly man the second time. The man didn't say a word, but gestured at the pavilion behind Arthur's back. After that the man disappeared into the darkness. Arthur didn't know what to think of it. He only felt that there was something mysterious about the man.

The boy walked into the pavilion. In the middle of it there was a big stone with a sword in it. There were words on the stone, but Arthur wasn't interested in the words. All he saw was the sword. The boy pulled it and the weapon left the stone without any difficulty. Happy Arthur ran to find his brother. Kay didn't even say thank you to his little brother. "What a wonderful sword," he said. Now Arthur noticed that the sword was really unusual.

When the boys found their father, Sir Ector saw the sword and asked Kay about it. The boy had to tell him the truth. Then Sir Ector said, "Take me to that stone, Arthur, I want to see it with my own eyes." And Arthur did as his father told him.

2) Sir Ector and his two sons went through the dark streets to the pavilion. Everything inside it was the same as before: the huge stone was standing in the middle and the candles were burning around it. Sir Ector came up to the stone and read the words on it aloud. They said, "He who draws the sword from the stone is the trueborn King of Britain."

Kay heard the words and lied, "It was me, Father. Arthur is too young to pull the sword from the stone. I did it. I am the trueborn king!" Sir Ector knew his elder son well. "If you did it before," he said, "you can do it again. Put the sword back in the stone and then draw it out."

Kay put the tip of the sword on the stone and it got in up to the hilt. Then Kay tried to pull the sword out, but nothing happened. He pulled harder till his face was red. The sword didn't move. Then Sir Ector tried to draw the sword out, but the weapon stayed in the stone.

a hilt [hilt]

"Well, now you try, Arthur," said Sir Ector. The boy took hold of the hilt and the sword came out without any difficulty. When Sir Ector and Kay saw it, they knelt before the boy. That surprised Arthur and he said, "Please don't kneel before me as I can't be your king."

Suddenly they heard a loud voice saying, "Yes, you can, Arthur. You are the trueborn son of a king, and you will be King of the Britons." The voice belonged to the tall man in a long dark cloak. Arthur remembered him very well. The man took off his hood and they saw the stranger's face. "Merlin," said Sir Ector. "It's you!"
