Reading Class Three

1 Read the third part of King Arthur's story and choose the appropriate names for its two chapters.

1) Merlin was a wizard and there were lots of stories about him, but until that moment Arthur had no idea that Merlin was real. Anyhow, the biggest surprise for the boy was the wizard's words. "You said I was a king's son. Sir Ector is my father and he isn't a king!" said Arthur to Merlin. At that moment Sir Ector spoke, "I love you as my son, Arthur," he said, "but you are not of my blood. Your father is the great Uther Pendragon."

And Sir Ector told Arthur the whole story. Uther knew about the plot against him, he had to ask Merlin to save his baby son. The wizard took the baby boy to Sir Ector's castle and left him there. Sir Ector brought up Arthur as his own child and never told anybody the secret of his birth.

Arthur thanked Sir Ector from the bottom of his heart. "I will always think of you as my father," he said, "and Kay will always be my brother." The three of them hugged and joined hands.

"The time has come for you to take your rightful place, Arthur," said Merlin. "I have called the warlords together, so that they could meet their king. We want a leader to unite us against the Saxons."

"But I'm only a boy," said Arthur. "I'm too young to become king. I don't think the warlords will ever take me as their leader." Merlin smiled at the boy and said, "Don't worry, Arthur, just put the sword back in the stone."

2) The next day all the warlords came together around the stone with the wonderful sword in it. They discussed the writing everybody could read there. Sir Ector and his two sons were standing there too. "Everyone must go through the test of kingship," said Merlin to the lords. "Every man, young or old, shall try to pull the sword out." And they did. Each of them came to the stone to try and draw out the sword but had no success. Everybody did their best because each man wanted to become King of Britain.

At last it was Arthur's turn. He slowly came up to the stone. All the eyes were on him. Nobody believed that such a young boy could be as strong as that. Some of the lords smiled skeptically. Arthur took hold of the hilt like he did before and pulled the sword out. At that moment he felt unusually powerful.

Arthur showed the sword to the crowd of people around him.

Some of the warlords got angry: they thought it was Merlin's doings and said they were ready to kill the wizard and the boy. When they came close to Arthur with their bare swords, the boy suddenly understood that he was not afraid of the lords and that he was stronger than them. He also knew it was the most important moment of his life.

He went into action and used his wonderful sword with such skill that the people around couldn't believe their eyes. The boy fought like a man, what is more, he fought like a king.

Soon all the warlords knelt to Arthur, the new King of Britons, their powerful and legendary leader.
